The United Nations Children?s Fund (UNICEF) of France will now accept donations in at least nine virtual currencies. The UNICEF office of France made the announcement saying that henceforth, donors can now go to the organization?s website and donate using any of the nine digital currencies. These include Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Ripple (XRP), Litecoin (LTC), Dash (DASH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Stellar, EOS, and Monero (XMR).
According to the UNICEF France?s executive director, Sebastien Lyon, ?Cryptocurrency and blockchain technology used for charitable purposes offer a new opportunity to appeal to the generosity of the public and continue to develop our operations with children in the countries of intervention.” He further added that virtual currencies and their underlying technology provide a different way of raising funds to fulfill humanitarian goals. Incidentally, initially, UNICEF did not favor using this technology for generating a donation.
Game Chaingers changed the view of UNICEF towards cryptocurrency
UNICEF France?s Game Chaingers campaign became extremely successful which motivated the organization to start accepting donations in cryptocurrencies. The campaign?s aim was to attract the attention of online video game players towards the suffering of children in Syria and motivate them to donate. Other donators can also donate to the cause by downloading the cryptocurrency mining app from the official website of UNICEF. During the span of the campaign, that ended in March this year, miners mined $20,609 worth 85 Ethereum tokens.
According to UNICEF, the campaign is a type of fundraiser program, first of its kind made using blockchain technology of Ethereum. In this campaign, the platform aggregates the graphics cards? computing power of the gamers, mine and then generate ETH as a donation. In this process, the donors do not need to offer Euro for supporting UNICEF monetarily.
